The most common mistake when thinking about hovercrafting is comparing this to a karting experience. The fact is, hovercrafts are nothing like a kart and handle very differently.

Hovercrafts are among the most fun and whacky vehicles to drive and experience while on your stag party or hen weekend. Perhaps the biggest difference between the hovercraft and most other vehicles is that there are no breaks! That and of course these machines glide on a cushion of air over land or water.

Hovercrafting is definitely a skill which is fun to try and master. Even if you are an excellent driver in every day life it doesn't mean you will find hovercrafting easy as this is far more of a challenge. Hovercrafting requires skill, good judgement and balance.

In something like a kart, to turn a corner you would normally hit the breaks and slide when you approach. Not so in a hovercraft! You cant stay on the throttle and slide around as you would in an ordinary land based vehicle as you will simply carry on straight forward. These vehicles will require you to use your body weight and planning to control them making this an extremely enjoyable event.

To assist you in manoeuvring one of these machines, you will also find inside handle bars and a hand throttle. No breaks, no peddles - a completely different driving experience.

You may also be wondering how to stop a hovercraft without the use of breaks. Stopping is achieved by releasing the throttle which will deflate the cushion of air and bring you to a stand still. As we've said, oh so different to a kart.

The first ever hovercraft was developed in the 1950's and was launched in the Solent

The hovercraft was originally dubbed "a man made flying saucer" by amazed spectators

The average hovercraft travels up to 35mph

A hovercraft is sometimes referred to as an Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV)

The largest civil hovercraft weighs 310 metric tonnes
